Today was Monkey 's Christening. He was almost perfect.Knowing that sitting for a while can be a challenge for anyone, much less a baby, we put Monkey down for a nap and fed him the hour or so before we had to leave for church. Also being the smart parents we are, we dressed him in a tee for the car ride over. Once we got there we pulled out the little white romper to dress him up. Everything fit, all pieces were accounted for, and Monkey was in a great mood.
We took pictures, visited with grandparents & godparents, then made our way into the church. A good half hour had probably passed since we dressed him, and we were seated to begin the ceremony. We were in the home stretch. It was quiet, everyone was seated and intent on Father's words. I had taken off the bib Monkey was wearing, so that I could unbutton his outfit in order for Father to anoint his chest. No sooner than I had unbuttoned him, the bright orange sweet potatoes he had for lunch came up...and onto the little white romper! We had nothing to wipe him with, as the diaper bag was on the OTHER SIDE OF THE CHURCH where the rest of our family was sitting. Corey braved up and walked across the front of the altar just to get the bag with our wipes (what a great dad!). Nothing took the orange out, but at least the bib was clean (? how ironic) so I put it back on him to cover up the stains as best I could. Oh well. Like the sidebar says "Sometimes life's a little messy". I was proud of myself at how non-upset I was. Pre-baby, I would have totally freaked had something of this caliber occurred. Now I just roll.
So that was it. He was an angel the rest of the ceremony. He played with a toy most of the time, made faces at the lady behind us, clapped a lot, and talked a little. One of the best moments was when we were at the baptismal font, and I was leaning him back for the actual baptism. The look of horror on his face was priceless, until he heard the running water and reached back to try to splash around. It took all my strength to keep him from diving into the font itself. Guess he though it was bathtime.
