I bought some horizontal organizers yesterday (and had a horrible time at Target, but that's another story) to store our shoes in our closet. Corey's had his shoes tucked under the bed, and mine have been haphazardly piled in a laundry basket for some time now. We had hesitated getting them before now since we're still storing some stuff on the closet floor.
A light bulb went off the other day, and I realized that we could stack the laundry baskets on top of the new shelves in the meantime, and still get shoes neatly stored.
So I got the shelves expecting a quick swap and sort. Not the case - it turned into an hours-long affair due to Corey's inordinate amount of tshirts, shorts, sweaters, etc. which were in the way. It snowballed, really. I had to move two boxes so decided to clean them up instead of just relocating them. Once I cleaned them up, it made the rest of the stuff look worse, so we had to organize that as well. I wish I'd taken pictures of the before/during/after. Let's just say that Monkey was lost in a pile of tshirts for a little while. It was a mess.
The positive side of it all is that we have a bag of stuff to donate, a lot of junk in the trash cans, neatly stacked sweaters & clothes, and organized, easily accessible shoes. It's still not my ideal closet situation, but it's much improved. And I had a ton of fun putting the shelves together with Monkey 's assistance - and he did indeed assist. He's a great helper.
I guess sorting through that stuff kicked off some dormant organizational urges within Corey (we'll see how long it lasts!) since today he sorted through some things in the garage, and we can see about 1/3 of the floor in the dining room now.
Baby steps.
Baby steps.
